Clear communication is important. Therefore i chose my words carefully when making this label.
Simple and effective; this statement is never not true… and normally the first thing people want to know when they find my cup mysteriously sitting on their desk.

What does this look like to you?
We were looking at this shape at work today right after i got done eating some fun-dip. Yes… fun-dip. As in lick-m-aid. Someone gave me one for valentine’s day… so when i looked at this popsicle-stick shaped thing, the first thing i thought of was the white stick that comes with fun-dip. My coworker, on the other hand, said “that looks like a pregnancy test.”
I just thought it was funny that the same shape made me think of something that you put in your mouth, and she saw something that you pee on.
History of Comic Sans (yuck!)
I wonder how much it would suck to be known as the guy who created comic sans. It’s not his fault he created the bane of the typographical world… He could not have predicted how insanely popular it became. If it were me though, i would drive around town in a bulletproof car. =)

Friends… I am deeply deeply deeply satisfied with how this whole thing has played out.
Historically, I have had a hard time finishing personal projects… but as I’ve matured I have discovered new heights of patience, focus, and dedication. The last few tracks are off being mastered, and already this is the THE most complete production that has ever sprung from my brain. Nothing was rushed or compromised… but somehow I managed to avoid falling victim to my own ADD nature. For the first time, I have nitpicked the shit out of every detail of something, (from the music to the message to the album art) for years and actually finished what I started. I am still sort of shocked, to be honest.
I’ve spent virtually every free moment for the past 2 years working on this thing… and now that it’s over, I’m not quite sure what to do with myself.
Oh and did I tell you that it’s coming out on Muti? (www.mutimusic.com)

Killer Motion Graphics
I saw “The Kingdom” a few weeks back… and even though the movie was kind of “ho hum” sensationalism, the intro blew me the fuck away. It is an amazing blend of info graphics, motion graphics and video footage… seamless and powerful.

I am especially impressed with how there is 2D type floating in 3D space… and when the camera moves it creates differing text sizes that align in typographically sound ways on the horizon line. Also the 3D oil consumption bar-graph for the United States turning into the WTC was pretty clever.
Ford Logo Redesign?
In an effort to “keep up with the jones’s logos” Ford is updating theirs too… just like chevron and dunkin donuts and flippin’ EVERYBODY.

Clearly Ford would jump off a bridge too if everyone else was doing it. Personally I’m an advocate of “Historic Design Preservation”… All that chevron did with their logo-change was make it harder to print.
“surprising and commendable?” I object. It’s predictable and despicable.

The first time I punched in my new work address on my gps, the robot lady’s voice said “arriving at duarte… on right.” but it was pronounced “doo-art”… this morning i had the gps with me so i could find this random cafe that i have a gift card for… and i punched in duarte’s address to find my way back. (these devices are so handy when you move to a new town) This time, for some reason, it prounced it correctly… “duarté… doo-ar-tay…”
What changed? was there some sort of firmware update that i missed? Did the thing hear me making fun of it and change? It got me thinking about two things:
1) how funny would it be to make an insecure computer that was sensitive to being bagged on? It learns by trying to avoid the discomfort of embarassment… maybe it could pick up data from it’s surrounding via microphone and camera… sensing your laughter and then listening for key words to figure out what it did… Might be an interesting experiment.
2) Why do people think that pronouncing things in a “foreign” way makes it sound fancier or something? Remember the story about Target being called “tar-zhay” in france? I heard somewhere that rumor was actually started by Target themselves… part of a guerilla marketing strategy intented to raise target’s profile by making it sound like an upscale boutique… (however i cannot find any evidence of this now online… there may be a two-tier urban legend going on here)….
Either way… the pronunciation thing… lame. Softimage, the 3D graphics software www.softimage.com/ , is referred to as “Soft Imahhhje” by the company themselves for exactly this reason. I thought people were just trying to sound fancy but i went to this tradeshow and the company reps referred to it as “Soft Imahhhjjjje” right there on the podium. Where the fuck do you get the Je sound from? It clearly says Soft… IMAGE. Soft fucking image. Don’t be lame.
I can’t remember who, but i had a friend refer to wikipedia as “Why-key-pedia” once and that one baffled me too… is it because it’s spelled Wiki and not Wicky? Or is there something deeper going on here?
I know there are a million other examples of this practice but i can’t think of any more than those right now… so i implore you… please add to this list… right now…
