Video footage from Lucidity Festival 2013. Unfortunately most of the day shots are less-than-HD quality because I forgot to check the settings on the camera before shooting. I learned a lot putting this together though… next time I’ll be more prepared. =)

Lucidity Festival (a memoir)

Aug 3, 2013   //   by SeventhSwami   //   Blog  //  No Comments

It’s been a few years since I announced that I was going into hiding, and I have been avoiding bookings for a number of personal reasons, but in April I got an offer that I simply could not refuse… a sunset timeslot in Santa Barbara at Lucidity Festival on the main stage, sandwiched between Psy Fi and Bluetech and surrounded by four corners of Funktion Ones!

It’s been so long since I’ve played out, there were a number of logistical hurdles to overcome before I would be ready to play. Not only would I have to re-install Ableton Live, but I would also have to download all new music as well. Not only was my music scattered across multiple archival hard drives, most of it felt pretty tired by this point anyway. There can be no half-assing a show of this caliber. Before long I was back in the groove, with a fresh head on my shoulders and a renewed vigor. After wiping the dust from my midi controllers, Emily and I rolled our asses down to Lucidity… And for the first time in a long time I was nervous to play.

Upon arrival, I was completely stunned. Familiar faces emerged from the crowd to ask if I’d “come out of retirement”, and people I’ve never met told me how happy they were that I had come. I had no idea SoCal had so much love for my music. When sunset arrived, I gave one of the best performances of my life, for one of the most amazing audiences I’ve ever played for. But the most humbling experience came later that evening, a fan on the dance floor told that he had dragged friends from miles away to come see me… and proceeded to dissect my entire musical career, citing the sets that signified changes in my music’s direction, and took a few guesses at what might have prompted my change of heart. He was REALLY listening… and he was right on all counts.

Half of the reason I went on sabbatical was because I wanted to focus on my design career for a while (putting all eggs in one basket for a change), but the other half was due to feeling completely stagnant, musically. I felt like my writing style was becoming too formulaic, and the pressure to play my own produced work made my sets feel uninspired and repetitive. For those reasons, my 3rd release “Space” never saw it’s way to completion. (the only track I finished is now available for free download, via MK2systems)

Lucidity Festival was a spiritual turning point for me, because the people I met really struck such an emotional chord, and made me remember why I started DJing in the first place. If you look at my first memekast set from 2007, my bio says, “Swami is the archetypal DJ as shaman, his mission to “Raise more people’s spiritual awareness through the ecstatic dance experience.” Somewhere along the line I fell victim to the curse of the music producer… always holding my own work up to the impossibly high standards of others. The magical people I met that weekend reminded me that my music still does it’s work, despite my becoming disconnected from it’s purpose.

So until next time, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I hope to see you all again soon. =)~S

Letters From the Void on Clipping Paths 2

Oct 25, 2012   //   by SeventhSwami   //   Blog  //  No Comments
“I always take this compilation a little more personally as they are all tunes that move me deeply
in some way and I spend a lot of time with the tunes trying to find a certain flow that makes
it a journey.”
~ Dov
The original Clipping Paths compilation in 2007 set a tone for many emerging sounds from Muti Music and featured ‘then’ new artists Ooah, Vibesquad, Audiovoid, Nanda, Timonkey, Slidecamp and Muti regulars like An-ten-nae and Dov, needless to say it has been quoted by many as an influence and has proven to help define new sounds that have blown up in the years that followed.

‘Clipping Paths 2’ proves to be an epic listeners journey and it does deliver a healthy dose of pretty and just a smidgen of the hard to make the pretty stand out just a little more, the artists featured prove to be high end producers with a healthy amount of wonky attitude and understanding of some deeper musical realms.

Track 10: SeventhSwami – Letters From the Void

Clipping Paths 2 is available from any of the following online digital retailers:

Addictech
beatport
iTunes
Amazon

Janky Bird Orchestra part 2
